Is hypnosis legit alternative medicine?

I was watching the way a hypnotist on TV was saying that his form of hypnosis could cure many of the common ailments and addictions people have, and was wondering what kind of degree he has to make these claims. I’m not disputing that hypnosis is effective. I’m sure it works for some people. But can you really just hypnotize anyone and expect that they’re no longer going to want to smoke a cigarette, or overeat, or do any of the other unhealthy things they’ve spent a lifetime doing? I guess you can think of hypnosis as a kind of alternative medicine.
