Supernanny & Nanny 911

Supernanny and Nanny 911 are two popular reality TV shows about out-of-control kids and their parents who are desperate to restore order in the household. Both feature Mary Poppins-like nannies who temporarily take over and whip everyone into shape - both the parents’ skills in structure and discipline and the children’s skills in manners and obedience. The nannies’ methods have been criticized for teaching children how to “behave” but not how to truly be a good person. One critic emphasized the need of a combination of “warmth and reason”. However, wishy-washy parents get that way because they’ve been too soft (”warm”) and inconsistent (not enforcing expectations backed by “reason” often enough). They need to learn to use “reason” consistently before bringing back the right amount of “warmth” to strike a disciplinary balance that is both loving and firm.
